A History of the Popes in the Twentieth Century: Their Struggle for Spiritual Clarity Against Political Confusion
There were seven of them, and, after a review of the papacy during the 18th and 19th centuries as a background, Cummings (theology, Mount Angel Seminary, Oregon) takes them in turn. His point, however, is not to add brief biographies to the many full biographies of each, but to trace, pope by pope, how the papacy changed during the course of the century. He argues that recognizing how the papacy has adapted to conditions in the past gives reassurance that it will do so in the future as well.
